The Canadian Association of Optometrists suggests bringing your child in for their first eye check-up when they’re just 6 months old. Even at this young age, we can start looking for and treating issues like crossed eyes or lazy eye. And don’t worry, we’ll make sure their visit is fun and safe!
After their first check-up, it’s a good idea to bring them in every year. Between the ages of 1 and 2, their hand-eye coordination and depth perception are still developing, so it’s crucial to keep an eye on their vision. You can also help at home by doing activities like painting, drawing, playing with blocks, or doing puzzles.
As your child gets older, they might think they don’t need to see the eye doctor anymore because their vision seems fine. But they might not notice if something’s changed. They could be at risk of developing nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, which can affect their learning. If they have nearsightedness, we offer programs to help slow it down and fix any vision issues it causes.
