Cataracts
The lens of the eye is a vital component that helps us focus on objects at different distances by adjusting its shape. However, as we age, this lens can gradually become cloudy, leading to a condition known as cataracts.
What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a common eye condition that affects nearly everyone, especially those aged 60 and older. Despite being highly treatable, cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in Canada.

Symptoms of Cataracts
If you suspect you have cataracts, watch out for these common symptoms:
  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Decreased night vision
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Persistent film over the eyes that won't clear
  • Causes and Risk Factors
Most cataracts develop slowly with age, but they can also be caused by other factors such as:
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Preventing Cataracts
While it’s not entirely possible to prevent cataracts, you can take steps to slow their progression:
    ● Wear UV protection outdoors or when exposed to UV rays.
    ● Incorporate eye-friendly foods into your diet, such as small red beans, blueberries, pecans, red berries (cranberries, strawberries, raspberries), prunes, apples, artichokes, and dark green vegetables (kale, broccoli, etc.).
